Where’s My Refund CT (Connecticut)?

Trying to find out about your CT tax refund status? It can be frustrating having to wait to get your refund in Connecticut. It leads many people to ask, “where’s my refund CT?!”

In this article, we will share where and how to get more information on your CT tax refund status, what you can do to check updates, and what may be causing the delays (if any). We have also included more information on Connecticut state income tax rates for individuals.

Where’s My Refund CT?

If you file your Connecticut state income tax return online and do so through their Taxpayer Services Center, you can expect to get your refund within just a few business days. To see how you can file your CT taxes online, visit the Department of Revenue Services portal here.

If you have filed your Connecticut state tax returns and are expecting a refund, there are a few ways to check the status. Below you’ll find the easiest ways to check to see where your refund is and when you can expect to get it.

Where to Check the Status of Your Connecticut Tax Refund

The fastest and easiest way to check the status of your Connecticut Tax Refund is to do it online. The state has a secure portal, you may visit their website at https://portal.ct.gov/DRS/Individuals/Individual-Tax-Page/Status-of-Refund

Enter the following information:

  • Your Social Security Number (SSN)
  • The tax year
  • And the exact refund amount (only the whole dollar amount as reported on your CT income tax return, do not include cents)

Then click the “Next” button to check your refund status.

How to Contact the Connecticut State Department of Revenue

If you don’t want to check your tax refund status online, the state also has a 24-hour automated phone refund system you can use. There is a toll-free number for those calls from Connecticut outside the Greater Hartford area. That number is 800-382-9463. It’s a toll-free hotline. On the other hand, if you’re calling anywhere, the phone number to call is 860-297-5962.

Again, you will need your social security number (if you filed a joint return with your spouse, enter the SSN for the spouse who appears first on the return) and the exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund amount.

More On Your CT Refund Status

While it should only take a few days to get your refund if you file your return electronically, it’s different for paper returns. It usually takes the state between 10 – 12 weeks to process these returns. This will cause a big delay in getting your refund.

Also important to note is that until the CT Department of Revenue Services processes your return, it will not show up in their computer system. This means you will not be able to get any information about your refund status until the return is processed.

CT Tax Refund Delayed More Than 12 Weeks?

What do you do if it has been more than 12 weeks since you filed your return and you have not gotten your refund? In this case, you’ll want to call DRS directly at 860-297-5962.

If it takes the state more than 90 days to process your refund after they receive your claim for a refund, you are entitled to get interest on your refund. This interest is 2/3% for each month (or part of a month).

What Can Cause a Delay In Your CT Tax Refund?

If you have been waiting a while to get your CT tax refund, you might wonder why there is a delay. Well, several things can slow down a refund getting to you. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Filing your return through the mail instead of electronically
  • Requesting the refund by check instead of direct deposit
  • Providing the incorrect direct deposit information
  • Any errors made on your return
  • The Connecticut DRS might have to verify some of the information reported on your return. In cases like this, they may contact you to provide additional information. Any back and forth like this will delay your CT refund.
  • People who file more complex returns that require multiple forms may take longer for the state to process.
  • Lastly, there may be delays because there is any missing or incomplete information on your return.

The best thing you can do to get your refund as fast as possible is to file electronically and double (if not triple!) check your returns.

CT Refund Options

One of the things you can do to get your refund as fast as possible is to request to get it by direct deposit. This lets the state of Connecticut deposit the money directly into your bank account. Not only is this faster than getting a paper check (which you can still request), but it eliminates any chance of your refund getting lost, stolen or returned as undeliverable.

When requesting a direct deposit for your refund, enter your bank account number and bank’s routing number on your tax return.

If you are a first-time Connecticut income tax filer, unfortunately, you are not eligible for direct deposit. In this case, you will have to wait for a paper check to come in the mail.
